Mijn opa met dezelfde naam, Jurjen Rollingswier, startte in 1916 een onderneming in Achlum, een dorpje hier niet ver vandaan. Hij was slagersknecht en kocht rundvet in dat hij bewerkte zodat het gereed werd gemaakt voor menselijke consumptie. Het rundvet werd verkocht aan de omliggende boerderijen in de wijde omgeving. Dat was het begin van wat nu de kleinste zelfstandige margarinefabriek in Nederland is. Later is mijn opa van Achlum naar Franeker verhuist. Eerst naar de binnenstad en later naar de Prins Hendrikkade.

Verderop op deze kade heeft mijn opa rond 1928 een fabriek laten bouwen waar mijn vader de eerste steen gelegd heeft. Begin zestiger jaren heeft mijn vader dit pakhuis gekocht. Dit prachtige pand is omstreeks 1875 gebouwd. Tegenwoordig is ons kantoor en productie hier gevestigd.

Twee panden verder op de kade staat nog een uniek gebouw wat rond 1876 is gebouwd: de Franeker Factorij. Dat pakhuis diende als opslagruimte voor het koren van de Friese landbouwgronden. Momenteel zijn er diverse bedrijven in gehuisvest. Beide historische en herkenbare panden op de kade zijn van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang.

Jurjen Rollingswier (2021)

In 1916 my grandpa of the same name, Jurjen Rollingswier, founded his company in Achlum, a village not far from here. He was a butchers’ hand. He purchased bovine fat and prepared it for human consumption. He sold the fat to farms in the wide surroundings.

That was the beginning of what now is the smallest independent margarine factory of the Netherlands. Later, my grandfather moved from Achlum to Franeker. First to the city centre, later to the Prins Hendrikkade. Further down this wharf, around 1928, my grandfather built a factory, for which my father laid the cornerstone. My father acquired this warehouse in the early sixties. A beautiful edifice, which was constructed around 1975. Nowadays, our office and production facilities are located here.

Two buildings down the wharf there’s another unique warehouse: the Franeker Factorij, built around 1876. It served as storage facility for the grain of the Frisian farmlands. At the moment, various businesses are based here. Both historic and iconic premises at these quays are of general cultural, historic and architectural importance.
