Nee! Het spijt mij! …De bibliotheek is voor alle bezoek gesloten! Tot nader order, ja! Officieel gaat het om een reorganisatie. Een nieuwe bibliotheekcatalogus. Maar tussen ons gezegd en gezwegen, in werkelijkheid gaat het om een crimineel onderzoek. Daar kan ik u natuurlijk niets over zeggen. Dat begrijpt u.

Ik moet zwijgen als het graf! En… u heeft het dan ook niet van mij, maar het gaat om een grote ‘boekenroof’! Maar liefst ‘122’ boeken in de afgelopen vier jaar. Een pijnlijke kwestie. Voor de academie als geheel en in het bijzonder voor de heer Verhel –de vorige bibliothecaris-. Het is nog steeds een raadsel hoe de dieven het hebben aangepakt. Het gaat immers om ‘grote’ boeken! Zware folianten! Die stop je niet zomaar even ergens weg… En de meesten zaten ook nog eens met een ketting vast aan de boekenkast!

56 van die kettingen hebben we in de bibliotheek teruggevonden, achter de lambrisering. Maar van de boeken zelf ontbreekt ieder spoor. Ja… ‘8’. Acht hebben we teruggevonden op de kamer van een student. (Roddelende toon) De zoon van één van onze professoren… Hij is onze hoofdverdachte. Maar hij zwijgt! En ook al wordt hij straks veroordeeld… Al die bijzondere boeken zijn nog steeds spoorloos. Ik ben zelfs al bij boekwinkels in Amsterdam wezen informeren! Maar ook dat heeft niets opgeleverd. Mocht u dus nog tips hebben over oude boeken, dan houd ik mij van harte aanbevolen…

I have to be silent as the grave! And… you did not hear it from me, but this is all about a big ‘book robbery’. At least 122 books have disappeared during the past four years.

A painful matter for the Academy as a whole and more specific for mister Verhel – the former librarian. It’s still a riddle how the thieves have operated. For there were really ‘big’ books involved! Heavy foliants! One can’t stash them away just like that… Most of these had been secured to the book case with chains!

We recovered 56 of those chains in the library itself, behind the panelling. But there’s no trace at all of any of the books. Yes, eight. We recovered eight books in the room of a student.
(Gossiping tone) The son of one of our professors… He is our main suspect. But he doesn’t say a word! And even if he gets convicted in the end… the precious books are still lost without a trace.

I even have informed at book stores in Amsterdam! But that was to no avail. So if you have any tips about these ancient books, I would be very happy to hear it…
