Mooi hè!? Zo’n hele muur vol gevelstenen! Wat u dáár ziet, is de ‘academische waardigheid’ in optima forma! Bovenaan! Het wapen van Friesland! Met gelijk daaronder het stadswapen, de klok van Franeker. En het wapen van onze stadhouder -graaf Willem Lodewijk van Nassau- en van zijn echtgenote, prinses Anna van Oranje. (alsof de pedel antwoord geeft op een domme vraag:) ómdat de stadhouder de stíchter is van onze academie!

Stelt u zich voor! In ‘1585’! …Nog midden in de oorlog tegen Spanje! En dan tóch de tijd en het geld vrijmaken om een academie te stichten! Dát is wat je noemt ‘visionair handelen’! (samenvattend) Afijn, die teksten daaronder die kunt u allemaal verder wel zelf lezen! Waar het míj om gaat is dus die ‘waardigheid’! Want dáár wordt ik als ‘pedel’ natuurlijk op aangekeken! Bij de opening van het academisch jaar bijvoorbeeld, wanneer de heren professoren in optocht door de stad gaan. En bij de benoeming van nieuwe hoogleraren of bij academische promoties… Dan kun je die gevelstenen niet allemaal meenemen natuurlijk. Dus dan loop ík voorop! En met mijn staf representeer ik dan ál die waardigheid, het gezag én de reputatie van de academie.

‘Een wandelende gevelsteen!? Wat dénkt u wel! Pas op hè!? Met deze pedelstaf kan ik ook héél hard slaan!

Or at the appointment of new professors or at academic promotions… One cannot bring al these cornerstones to the procession, of course. That’s why I’ll be walking up front.
