Als kunstenaar was ik al een tijdje in Frankrijk bezig. Maar toen ik in 1993 startte met het werken met glas, werd ik betoverd. De subtiele kleuren van glas sluiten aan bij mijn wens om de wereld te romantiseren. Zeg maar: opnieuw te betoveren.

Ik wil je verleiden met de schoonheid en je vervolgens naar andere thema’s leiden. Glas manipuleert, transformeert….. Dat raakt mij, die kwetsbaarheid en kortstondigheid.

Kralen en kettingen zijn daar, voor mij, een uiting van. Zo bracht ik de vrolijke dans van Zonnekoning Lodewijk XIV terug in een fonteinontwerp voor het Paleis van Versailles. En toen kwam Franeker.

Het moest gaan over de Oortwolk, vond ik. Als diverse watervallen van druppels en verstuiving. Een verticale ketting van parels waarvan er eentje zilverkleurig is: als de maan. En dan de bovenste als het goud van de zon. Met daarom heen de mist. Als de wolk van sterren die Jan Hendrik Oort zag als zonnestelsel. Fijne druppeltjes, miljoenen stuks, net als de sterren in de vele Melkwegen in het heelal.

As an artist I had been working in France. I was enchanted, when I started to work with glass in 1993. Its subtle colours agreed with my wish to romanticize the world. In other words, to enchant again and again.

I want to tempt you with beauty and subsequently lead you to other themes. Glass manipulates, transforms… It hits me, this vulnerability and this transience.
To me, beads and chains express this feeling. This is why I have referred to the happy dance of Sun King Louis XIV, in my design for a fountain at the Versailles palace. And after that: there was Franeker.

This had to be about the Oort Cloud, I thought. Like a variety of waterfalls with drops and spray. A vertical chain of pearls, one of them silvery coloured, like the moon. And the upper one like the gold of the sun. Mists around it, like the cloud of stars that Jan Hendrik Oort had been watching, and which he interpreted as a solar system. Tiny droplets, millions of them, like the stars in the multitude of Milky Ways in the universe.
